Dr. Margaret Thompson of Counsel

Margaret Thompson MD JD MPAFF is one of the few doctor-lawyers working in the field of women’s health advocacy. Her medical expertise, combined with her legal and public policy knowledge and passion for women’s issues, makes her an effective crusader for women’s reproductive health rights.
Dr. Thompson attended Rice University and Duke University Medical School, graduating in 1978. She completed her residency at Duke in 1982. While at Duke, she was chosen as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and was awarded the prize for being the most skilled resident in surgery. She practiced OB-GYN in Austin for twenty-six years. After 15,000 babies and armed only with enthusiasm, she returned to school at fifty-something. She proudly received her J.D. from the University of Texas in 2007 and her Masters degree in Public Affairs from the LBJ School at the University of Texas in 2008.
Dr. Thompson is Board-certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and licensed to practice medicine in the State of Texas. She is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. During her medical career, she served on many committees and held numerous positions including President of the Austin OB-GYN Society, President of the Carter Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Chairman of the Medical Affiliate Board of Planned Parenthood, Chief of OB-GYN and Member of the Medical Ethics Committee of Seton Hospital, Executive Board Member of the Texas Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and Member of the Texas Medical Association Committee on Maternal Health.
She served as the gynecologist for the University of Texas athletic program for over twenty years. She was honored as the individual having the greatest impact on women’s health in Austin by the national organization, “Speaking of Women’s Health”. She was named one of the best doctors in America by BestDoctors.com and one of the top doctors in the U.S. by “Consumer’s Guide to Top Doctors”. Dr. Thompson was voted Austin’s favorite obstetrician for many years by Austin Family Magazine. She was also named one of the best doctors in Austin by Austin Monthly Magazine and a SuperDoctor by Texas Monthly.
Dr. Thompson was awarded Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 2000 for the development of the Renaissance Women’s Center, a women’s specialty hospital in Austin. She was also instrumental in the passage of legislation in Texas in 2001 banning gender discrimination in health care reimbursement. She has lectured at the University of Texas in the areas of reproductive rights, medical ethics, and professional responsibility and taught Health Policy at the LBJ School of Public Affairs and Argosy University.
Her professional interests include reproductive law and policy, medical ethics and professional responsibility, gender and racial differences in health care, prevention or errors and safety in medicine, and the delivery system for health care.
She is married with five sons – all successfully launched. Her hobbies include quilting, travel, reading, spending time at her jungle home in Panama, and playing with dogs, Badger and Bevo.
At the Mueller Firm, Dr. Thompson specializes in the complications and product defects associated with transvaginal surgical mesh.
